2 stories from the news this week. Bicycles and nail-guns. An idea came to mind last night (June 12) to write a quick song to the tune of "A Bicycle Built for Two". It took about an hour to write the lyrics, record it, mix it and submit it to WLUP. They aired the song at about 7:15 and again at 8:30 this morning. The first airing is very clean and as I hoped would happen, Johnny added the sound of a nail gun perfectly at the end. But during the second airing at 8:30, Johnny inadvertently restarted the song about 3/4 of the way through. I've never heard him do THAT before. Then he was all over the place and forgot about the nail gun. I am now convinced that Johnny was sober at 7:15 and then stoned at 8:30. Why would I say this? He interviewed Tommy Chong in the studio between about 7:30-8:15.

I believe that as American citizens, we have the right to gather, to protest and to advocate our views. But when these demonstrations disrupt or threaten the lives of others, it bothers me. It's inconsiderate and obnoxious. I am sure there are many good people who take part in critical mass, but to them I would say please just enjoy your bicycle with a few friends and do not engage in an activity which makes people hate bicyclists.

I have taken a fine jazz standard and rewritten it about a hyperactive radio host who urinated into a golf club. You might find this song offensive or immature, but I like it because I am an immature moron. Johnny really did have his producer Guy Bauer smell the urine for authenticity. I'm not a golfer, but am familiar with urination, and it looks to me like I would pee all over my hands, shorts and towel if I tried to use this odd device.

I was going to ask my wife to listen to this...then I realized she would probably appreciate NOT hearing this song now. She'll hear it one day at which point she will likely express disgust, but secretly she will like it!

It is a satire (the video is very funny) about a guy trying to make his moves on a girl he meets a a party. My song is about a certain radio news man who is constantly interrupted by the hyperactive host of the show.

It started with a harmonica loop and an idea to write a song called "my wife". Give it up for Adam- he came up with the M-A-N and W-I-F-E idea and contributed heavily to the lyrics. This song was written in early February, but we decided NOT to give this to our wives as Valentine's day gifts. I did play it for my wife- she smiled at times, but also gave hints that she was not thrilled (it was the rolling of her eyes during certain verses) and she may have said something like "why did I marry a freak head" under her breath. It's an original, not a parody. It would have been much better with a real female vocalist. My wife could have done it, but she adamantly refused when I asked. She has no time for this nonsense!

This song was conceived sitting in traffic on the Edens at 8 PM 5/7/08. Inspired by the Jonathan Brandmeier show earlier that day. I started recording the "Guitar" at 9 PM and then did the vocals on the macbook pro in our garage (D was going to sleep). That's not me doing background vocals- I recruited an actual Rat from the alley to stack harmony. He did okay, except on the word RAT. Friggin' Chicago rodent.
